Product Abstract: Originally from East Asia, black pepper is indigenous to low-lying forests with its vines reaching up to 6.5 meters. The black pepper is actually the berry of the vine. Pepper is also used in the food and pharmaceutical industry. It is actually considered a ‚Äúparasite‚Äù and grows up shady trees such as kapok or mango trees. Nowadays people encourage its growth up stakes. The vines begin to produce at 2-3 years old, and continue to produce for 15-20 years. It was used in Egypt as one of the embalming components. The Romans prized this spice so highly that it was used, instead of money, to pay rent and taxes. The oil is not as pungent as peppercorns because the main flavoring constituents are left behind in the distillation process. For this reason it is sent to the food and pharmaceutical industries after use.
